"Give people with a disability a chance to a working environment"

Project over view.

We wish to support disabled people in independence, integration and empowerment.
Our mission is to help people with disabilities into the working environment, so that they will be able to have their own income, increased independence and self-confidence in standing for their own rights.
For this project we need to train people in the skills for producing handicraft and empower them, increasing their confidence, facilitating transport if the disability doesn’t give flexibility and facilitating materials, so they are able to work from home (informal) or work in the community.

Two community based disability centers called ‘Senang Hati’ and ‘Yakkum’ have disabled people as members. These people need assistance to enter the working environment. There are also many other people living with their families in the community who are not members of Senang Hati or Yakkum who also need the opportunity to work. Facilitating entry to employment will have a positive effect on the well being of the disabled people. At the moment many people with disabilities live in poverty, without the facilities to lead a regular life and need an income to improve their access in life and their confidence.

This project proposes the establishment of a designers store selling high quality products Alun-Alun. Alun-Alun has agreed to this proposal and has agreed to donate ten different designs in June. From May to August the first production of these designs could be manufactured by the people with disabilities, meaning that we can open the store in Alun-Alun on the 17th of August 2008.
With this project, we will ensure the delivery of quality designs that people will buy because of the quality and not because of the disabled label. That’s the difference we need to make here. Often products are bought out of sympathy although they may be poor and made from cheap material, a result of the lack of understanding of how to put a quality product on the market. We will be working with ten different designers.

Three of these are famous designers in the Asian market and the other seven have a good experience in marketing and selling their products both overseas and in Indonesia. We will begin the operation with ten part time and ten full time people with a disability.
For the project overview we will work with an Indonesian supervisor. The supervisor will do the periodic evaluation and help the disabled people on effectiveness.

Background

People with disabilities in Indonesia are one of the most disadvantaged groups in society. Assuming that 3.5% of the total population has a disability, of a total population of 220 million people, there are more than 8 million people with disabilities in Indonesia, although they largely remain invisible and unable to achieve fully in society. 3% of population in Bali has a disability. The total population is 3.160.000 people giving around 95.000 people with a disability.

We need to support people with a disability, we must raise awareness and advocacy for the rights of people with a disability and develop and implement activities which include and empower people with disabilities. We must work on improving the access of people with disabilities to their basic rights, access to education, employment and other opportunities for equal participation in society. We want to support them in independence, integration and empowerment.

One of the aims is to help people with disabilities into the working environment, formal or informal, so that they will be able to have their own income, bringing them more independence and self-confidence and enabling them to stand up for their own rights.

VSO:

VSO has disability programs in 12 countries in Africa and Asia. Our aim is to support disabled people to participate as equal members of their families, communities, and societies.

Volunteers from VSO are supporting local organizations and governments to identify strategies that promote disabled people’s human rights, such as education, employment, and health care. We do this in two ways: by supporting disabled people’s organizations to raise awareness of issues that affect disabled people and by working to improve the accessibility and quality of mainstream and special services provided by both the government and by non governmental organizations.

What do we need:

We need to train people in the skills required to make the product. Therefore we need a place where the people can work and where we can house the machines that we need.

A Project Trainer/Supervisor. This person will be an Indonesian with a disability. We are looking for someone with the flexibility to move between places and who is self-confident enough to empower people to motivate them and to be a team-builder.

We require machines so that people can manufacture the products. A range of products will be made. The materials will need to be purchased and the workers will need a salary before the first product has been sold. They will be paid per produced design.

The benefit

Companies need to be mindful of social responsibility, respect and flexibility among people who live in poverty or who are unable to stand for their own rights. To make this project happen, we need funding, because our work is with nonprofit and charitable organization.

The people with a disability use their skills and qualities to manufacture a product they can be proud of, and through this give themselves an improved opportunity in life to develop and have equal participation.
